Self-Titled
Self-Titled is an exhibition of pilgrimages to sites that hold significance in my ancestry. These journeys deepened my understanding of the nuances of being a part of a family that has the duality of 200 years of history in the United States on one side, and the recent experience of first-generation immigrants on the other. Similar nuances are found in many families’ histories and often lead to questions: “Where do I belong?” and “Where am I welcome?” At each site, a familiar spirit greeted me with a range of hospitality, from warm embraces to feelings of being an intrusive, alien-like visitor. These four works form an homage to a presence from the past and a gateway to further evolution of personal identity.
